First, the words below are from my experience. It is very unique way to choose and it is very personal. It is also changing from player to player
Difference between handpans
Many people use the terms handpan, Hang, steel drum, and tongue drum interchangeably, but these instruments are quite different in origin, construction, and sound. Understanding these differences helps musicians choose the right instrument for their musical goals.
The Hang was the first instrument of its kind. It was invented in Switzerland in the early 2000s by PANArt. The name “Hang” is a registered trademark, so only instruments made by PANArt can officially be called Hang. The Hang has a very specific sound character, note layout, and playing philosophy. It is designed for subtle, expressive playing rather than volume or technical complexity.
A handpan is a broader category inspired by the Hang. After PANArt, other makers developed their own versions, which became known as handpans. While similar in shape—two steel shells with tuned notes—handpans vary greatly in scale, number of notes, sustain, and tonal color. Today, handpans offer much more diversity and are widely used for meditation, concerts, and modern compositions.
A steel drum, also known as a steel pan, comes from Trinidad and Tobago and has a completely different cultural and musical background. Steel drums are typically louder, brighter, and played with sticks instead of hands. They are commonly used in bands and ensembles, focusing on rhythm and melody rather than intimate, ambient soundscapes.
A tongue drum is another steel instrument but differs in construction. Instead of hammered notes, it has laser-cut or carved tongues. Tongue drums are usually easier to play, often tuned to a single scale, and produce a softer, more percussive sound. They are popular for relaxation and beginners but offer less dynamic range than a handpan.
In summary, while these instruments may look similar, their sound, history, and playing experience are distinct. Knowing the difference between a handpan, Hang, steel drum, and tongue drum helps you connect with the instrument that truly fits your musical expression.
